You are all warmly invited to OggCamp, an open culture and social media unconference scheduled for Sunday, 25 October 2009 in Wolverhampton in the UK. (That's the day after LUG Radio Live 2009 and will be held close by.) OggCamp is being organised by the Ubuntu UK Podcast and the Linux Outlaws. **What is an Unconference?** An unconference is an unscheduled, informal event, where participants volunteer to talk about, or lead a discussion on a subject. We hope people will come along and talk about anything related to open culture, free software and more besides. We don't everything that will happen on the day, but one thing is for sure: Both podcasts will be recording some live material at some point. **Why OggCamp?** We liked the name. :) The "Ogg" bit reflects free media and the "Camp" bit reflects the informal "barcamp" atmosphere we hope the event will have. The Ubuntu UK Podcast and Linux Outlaws are both distributed in the Ogg format. Sorry for the downtime, but it wasn't my fault - honest! The data centre in which the server sits that hosts the DNS and the forum for this site was attacked last Sunday night. The attack was a zero day type and took down around 2,000 servers and over 100,000 websites. Tuesday May 26th saw the seventh release of one of the favourite Ubuntu remixes - Linux Mint. Mint incorporates the best of Ubuntu with extra configuration tools, software and media codecs built in. This makes an easier experience for Linux users. As the website says: "The 7th release of Linux Mint comes with numerous bug fixes and a lot of improvements. In particular the menu system, the application manager and the upload manager now provide new features such as “Suggestions”, “Featured applications”, “SCP and SFTP support”. The underlying base of the operating system was also strengthened with a new adjustment mechanism which makes Linux Mint more robust and less vulnerable to Ubuntu package upgrades, and the introduction of virtual and meta packages which simplify upgrade paths and the installation of multiple desktop environments." It's well worth a download and a very good distro. |
The Free Software Pact is a decentralized initiative with local coordination in European countries. In a press release the Free Software Pact initiative called upon UK citizens and MEP candidates to stand up for the principles of a free society by backing free software in the upcoming European Parliament elections on June 4, 2009. After Monday nights performance Lincs LUG have been invited back to talk about more Open Source stuff... if anyone has any ideas of subjects that may be good to air, then please let us know, and you could be on the radio next time. I have offered to talk about Open Source alternatives to software to enable windows users access to the Open Source world, and to show the wealth of packages available to Linux Users. |
Today, Iain appeared on BBC Radio Lincolnshire to talk about Linux as an alternative to Windows. He spoke about what Linux is and what it does. Explaining that Linux is a viable alternative to our favourite propriety Operating System. A good 30 minutes of Linux on the Radio and hopefully brought Open Source into many peoples front rooms. As a LUG we must now be ready to answer any and all questions that come our way from this exposure to help promote our favourite OS. |
